On June 6 the Portland Aquarium by Mike Bennett Studios opened its doors in downtown Portland. This is an immersive art experience featuring over 100 whimsical, cartoon-style marine animal artworks. To clarify, there are no live animals here – just vibrant, larger-than-life illustrations, interactive displays, and playful storytelling that spark curiosity and joy for guests of all ages. It’s part art exhibit, part educational adventure, and totally unforgettable.
To bring this unique installation to life, Bennett collaborated with local ocean-focused nonprofits, including the Elakha Alliance and Oregon State University’s Big Fish Lab. Chanel Hason, Director of Outreach & Community Relations for the Elakha Alliance, served as the exhibit’s Head Marine Biologist. She worked closely with Bennett to ensure scientific accuracy and authored all 100+ marine animal descriptions featured in the complimentary guidebook each guest receives upon entry. This creative collaboration reflects the Elakha Alliance’s strategy to blend art and science in support of marine conservation and education across Oregon. We’re excited to share that exclusive Mike Bennett merchandise supporting the Elakha Alliance will be available when we table at the aquarium on the first Friday of each month — but an art print is available from our online store everyday!
