SUMMARY:Eat Like An Otter
DESCRIPTION:Join Shifting Tides NW for an immersive food experience that will bring you closer to our oceans bounty as well as the species that depend on and impact our healthy coastal ecosystems! This event will be a unique mix of coastal foraging\, seeing a sustainable aquaculture operation\, as well as enjoying a bites of local shellfish and seaweeds\, all while learning about the charismatic sea otter.allia \nPURCHASE TICKETS\nOnce abundant across the North Pacific\, sea otters were aggressively hunted during the maritime fur trade for their rich fur pelts\, resulting in a loss of 99% of the global population. While the species has recovered along much of its range\, there has not been a population of this important keystone species in Oregon for over 100 years. The Elakha Alliance is an Oregon nonprofit working to build the science\, policy\, and community engagement to reintroduce a population of sea otters to the Oregon Coast and 10% of sales from this event will go to their ongoing efforts to bring sea otters back to Oregon! \nLiving along coastal kelp forests and rocky reefs\, sea otters primarily feed on a variety of hard-shelled prey\, including sea urchins\, mussels\, clams\, crabs\, and snails. Their diet plays a crucial ecological role: by keeping sea urchin populations in check\, sea otters help maintain healthy kelp forests\, which are vital marine habitats. Sea otters are skilled foragers\, known for their use of tools to crack open hard shellfish and for wrapping themselves in kelp to anchor in place while eating. \nWe will be channeling our inner sea otter as we embark on a guided coastal foraging adventure to collect wild mussels. Learn about the intertidal ecology of Oregon’s rocky shores\, and the sustainability and seasonality of mussel harvesting along our coast. If mussel harvesting is open (marine bio-toxin dependent) at this time\, students will get their hand at actively foraging for mussels. If harvesting is closed we will use this as an in depth demonstration and discussion so you feel confident when they re-open! \nAfter foraging for mussels\, we will head to the Port of Bandon to explore the fascinating world of sustainable aquaculture with an exclusive visit to a sea urchin and seaweed farm. With the loss of sea otters on our coast\, came the spike in purple urchin populations\, which caused a rapid decline in bull kelp forests. This has influenced the farm-fed production of Oregon urchins for the culinary market. Urchins are typically fed Pacific Dulse\, which is also currently being farmed at The Port of Bandon by Oregon Seaweed for use in the culinary market and for urchin feed. \nWe’ll wrap up the day with a thoughtfully prepared shoreline cooking and shucking demo of mussels and urchins\, and some tasty bites featuring freshly harvested shellfish and seaweed\, highlighting the delicious diversity of foods that otters and coastal communities love. Whether you’re a curious foodie or a nature lover\, this is a celebration of ocean stewardship\, sustainability\, and unforgettable coastal cuisine.

SUMMARY:North Coast KelpFest! (California)
DESCRIPTION:The first North Coast KelpFest! was held from mid-May to mid-June 2024\, bringing art\, science\, food and film together to tell the story of kelp forests on California’s north coast. SUMMARY:Eugene Environmental Film Festival: Ocean Conservation Day
DESCRIPTION:The Eugene Environmental Film Festival believes in creating space and a platform to address and bring light to critical issues facing our planet. We support the work being done at local and global levels and share a deep connection and responsibility to protect the environment and work in solidarity with others in the struggle for environmental justice. \nWe seek to raise awareness of all that is the environment globally and locally. We aim to provide a holistic perspective concerning the ways that we enjoy the environment; to understand the ways the environment feeds and nourishes us; to address the exploitation and harm to the environment; and to explore ways that we resist and protect the environment. Our vision is to raise awareness and inspire positive change. \n\n\nOCEAN CONSERVATION DAY\nGET YOUR TICKETS \nFrom the fight to restore California’s lost kelp forests to the historic protest boat Golden Rule sailing for a world free of nuclear devastation\, these films spotlight communities confronting ecological destruction and working toward healing and resilience. \nFilm Screenings: 6:00-7:30pm \n\nSequoias of the Sea (54:00)\nGolden Rule – The Journey for Peace (33:46)\nScreening will be followed by discussion.\n\nAction by Elakha Alliance: 8:00pm-9:00pm \nJoin us with Elakha Alliance\, a nonprofit organization based in Oregon\, founded by tribal leaders\, conservationists\, and nonprofit advocates united by a powerful vision. SUMMARY:2025 Elakha Alliance Science Symposium (presented virtually)
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join the 2025 Elakha Alliance Science Symposium presented virtually on Monday October 27th\, 9:00am-3:00pm PST. Registration is required to attend the live presentations and to ask the speakers questions. \nOur focus this year are the “Restoring Balance: Sea Otter Conservation Lessons & Updates.” We’ve chosen the theme to coincide with the release of the newly published Sea Otter Conservation II: Nearshore Ecosystem Restoration. \nDriven nearly to extinction by the maritime fur trade\, sea otters have made one of conservation’s most remarkable comebacks. This new volume brings together leading experts to share the latest insights into their recovery and the profound role they play in restoring and strengthening coastal ecosystems. \nFrom kelp forests and eelgrass meadows to salt marshes and sandy shorelines\, sea otters influence the health of nearshore habitats in ways that ripple across marine and even terrestrial systems. The book also explores the history and socio-ecological consequences of the fur trade\, the challenges and opportunities of future reintroductions\, and the latest research on climate change\, genetics\, and population dynamics. \nAt this year’s symposium\, you’ll hear directly from the scientists and researchers who contributed to this landmark publication. Scroll down for the full schedule. \nWe are asking participants to provide a $10 registration fee/donation\, which will help the Elakha Alliance continue our work towards ocean conservation in Oregon. If you’re a student looking to attend and the registration fee is a hinderance\, please email Info@ElakhaAlliance.org for sponsorship opportunities. \nVIEW RECORDED PRESENTATIONS FROM 2025 HERE\n____________\nSymposium Presenter Schedule:\nUpdated 10/26: Heather Coletti who was scheduled to present at 1:00pm is unable to because of the federal government shutdown. We will now conclude the event at 3pm. \n\n9:00am PST: KEYNOTE: How the history of harvest and recovery influenced our understanding of the ecological role of sea otters\, Jim Bodkin\n10:00am PST: Sea otters and rocky reef communities\, Dr. Matt Edwards\n11:00am PST: The role of sea otters in seagrass and salt marsh communities\, Dr. Erin Foster\n12:00pm PST: A catastrophic and unintended experiment: Revisiting our understanding of sea otters and their social and ecological importance based on a system in transition\, Dr. Shawn Larson\n1:00pm PST: Reintroductions and restoring nearshore ecosystems-the Elakha Alliance: A new approach to sea otter conservation\, Bob Bailey\n2:00pm PST: Envisioning sea otter recovery in the 21st century\, Dr. Shawn Larson\n\n____________\n2025 PRESENTER BIOS\nBob Bailey\n \nBob spent nearly 40 years in coastal and ocean planning and management for the State of Oregon. He also served as a City Commissioner for the City of Oregon City\, a member of the City of Salem Budget Committee\, and chair of the Oregon Wave Energy Trust. He is currently the Board President of the Elakha Alliance. \nJim (James) Bodkin\n \nJames Bodkin is Scientist Emeritus with the US Geological Survey. Jim received a MSc degree from California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo in 1986. He led the sea otter and nearshore ecosystem research program for the USGS\, Alaska Science Center until his retirement in 2013 and continues to consult with government\, private and academic organizations regarding sea otters and coastal marine ecosystems. Jim has 47 years of experience with sea otters and marine ecosystems and co-edited Volume I of Sea Otter Conservation. \nHeather Coletti (Unable to present because of the federal government shutdown)\n \nHeather is a Marine Ecologist for the National Park Service. She is monitoring resources that are explicitly linked to the marine nearshore along regions within the Gulf of Alaska through the NPS SWAN I&M program and Gulf Watch Alaska. \nDr. Matt Edwards\n \nDr. Matt Edwards is interested in the causes and consequences of variability in biological communities. His research focuses on patterns of variation in giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests at multiple spatial and temporal scales throughout the species’ geographic range in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. As part of his research program\, he’s been examining the relative importance of numerous physical and biological factors in the structuring of kelp forest communities\, as well as how these factors modify interactions among co-occurring species\, with particular emphasis on large-scale phenomena (such as El Niño Southern Oscillations and global climate change). \nDr. Erin Foster\n \nDr. Erin Foster is a postdoctoral Research Scientist with the Cetacean Research Program at Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Pacific Biological Station. Erin received a PhD from the University of Victoria\, examining the effects of sea otter range expansion\, their influence on eelgrass population genetics and community ecology\, and the ancient relationships between sea otters\, clams\, and Indigenous clam gardening. Erin has 17 years of experience with sea otters and nearshore ecology and is interested in restoring the ecological interactions that have been lost or modified where keystone species are reduced. \nDr. Shawn Larson\n \nDr. Shawn Larson received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Science. Shawn is the Senior Conservation Research Manager at the Seattle Aquarium. She has been working with sea otters for 28 years focusing on sea otter reproduction\, population genetics\, diet characteristics\, nearshore ecology\, and most recently the sea otter’s role in mitigating climate change. Dr. Larson has organized and run the Sea Otter Conservation Workshop in Seattle since 1999\, serves as the Sea Otter Species Coordinator for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Species Survival Commission’s Otter Specialist Group and co-edited Volume 1 of Sea Otter Conservation.
