SUMMARY:SOAW: Sea Otters in Oregon - Road to Return Presentation (Coos Bay\, OR)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person presentation that’s free and open to the public at the Coos Bay Library on Thursday Sept 26th\, from 7pm-8pm. Kyle Motley\, Coastal Community Coordinator of the Elakha Alliance\, will tell us about efforts to return an iconic and once abundant native species to the Oregon coast – the sea otter. \nFur traders of the 18th and 19th centuries wiped out the sea otter along most of the entire Pacific West Coast\, including Oregon. Russian trappers valued their pelts so much they referred to them as “soft gold.” The Elakha Alliance\, which derives its name from the Chinook trade-jargon-word for sea otter\, is working to undo that damage and make for a more healthy marine environment. The alliance is a consortium of tribal\, conservation and nonprofit leaders founded in 1999.  Kyle will tell us how their work to reintroduce the sea otter is so much more than just taking a group of sea otters from one place and moving them to Oregon.

SUMMARY:OMSI's Science Pub Portland: Oregon's Sea Otter Translocation - What Happened?
DESCRIPTION:Sept 17\, 7-9PM | Doors @ 6PM | Advance tickets recommended; $5 suggested donation \n\n\n\n\nIn summers of 1970 and 1971\, a total of 93 sea otters were flown from Amchitka Island\, Alaska\, to Port Orford and Coos Bay for release into the ocean\, 25 sea otters survived. For nearly ten years they made themselves at home on Blanco Reef\, Simpson Reef and other sites. They even had pups. But gradually their numbers dwindled and by 1981\, all were gone. \n\n\n\n\nWhat happened? Why were they brought to southern Oregon in the first place? What can we learn from this episode as we think about returning sea otters to the Oregon coast? \n\n\n\n\nBob Bailey\, Board President of the Elakha Alliance\, will tell the tale and answer your questions. Come learn about this fascinating piece of history on the southern Oregon coast and join the discussion afterward. \nBob Bailey is the President of the Elakha Alliance’s Board of Directors. Bob spent nearly 40 years in coastal and ocean planning and management for the State of Oregon. He also served as a City Commissioner for the City of Oregon City\, a member of the City of Salem Budget Committee\, and chair of the Oregon Wave Energy Trust. \n\n\n\n\nZoom Option\nIf you are unable to join us in person\, you can watch on zoom. SUMMARY:Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Presentation: Sea Otter Reintroduction to the Southern Oregon Coast: Projected Regional Travel Impacts
DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Wednesday Business Connection (WBC) is your place to network with the community and is free and open to the public! WBC is held every Wednesday 11:30 AM -1 PM\, (September through May) in the Salmon Room (west) at the Mill Casino Hotel & RV Park in North Bend\, OR. \nOn March 13th\, Kyle Motley (Elakha Alliance Coastal Community Coordinator) and Jordan Bohlander (Dean Runyan Associates) will be the guest presenters. \nThe Elakha Alliance contracted with Dean Runyon & Associates to complete a study focused on how reintroducing sea otters to the Southern Oregon Coast could impact the travel and tourism industries in the region. Wildlife tourism is a sector of the travel industry that offers visitors the\nopportunity to view\, appreciate\, or learn about wildlife. Like all other sectors of the travel industry\, wildlife tourism injects “outside money” into the local economy. The study estimates that there would be a positive economic impact due to increased travel-related spending in the region once a sea otter population is established. This presentation will provide information about the Elakha Alliance’s work to reintroduce sea otters to the Oregon Coast and how reintroduction might impact local tourism economies. The mission of the WBC forum committee is to provide an opportunity for businesses to network with each other\, market products\, and expand their knowledge of the Bay Area business climate. The forums focus on the positive aspects of doing business in Oregon’s Bay Area. Speakers and subject matter include new businesses moving to the area\, business expansions\, and issues or items that can impact your operations.

SUMMARY:History Pub: Sea Otters of the Oregon Coast
DESCRIPTION:Oregon’s nearshore waters were once the homeland to thousands of sea otters\, an iconic species in the history of what is now known as Oregon. Sea otters have held a special role in the cultural\, spiritual\, and economic life of coastal Native American communities\, with oral traditions documenting the species’ significance. Their lustrous pelts brought great wealth in late-eighteenth- and nineteenth-century China\, motivating Euro-Americans to broker some of the earliest contact and trade between themselves and Native American people along the Oregon coast. Over a century of zealous hunting and trading of sea otters\, by Native people and Euro-Americans\, eliminated the species from Oregon’s coastal waters over 100 years ago. Presenter Cameron La Follette will offer an illustrated lecture on this ecological keystone species. La Follette is the co-author of articles in a special section of the Fall 2023 issue of the Oregon Historical Quarterly on “Sea Otters in Oregon.” \nCameron La Follette earned her master’s in psychology from New York University and her law degree from Columbia University. She is Executive Director of Oregon Coast Alliance\, a coastal conservation organization. Her book Sustainability and the Rights of Nature was published in 2017\, and the companion volume\, Sustainability and the Rights of Nature in Practice\, was published in 2019. La Follette was the lead researcher and author for the Summer 2018 special issue of OHQ\, “Oregon’s Manila Galleon.” She is also a traditional poet whose work is archived at the University of Oregon Special Collections and University Archives. Her research interests include land-use history\, early Pacific Northwest coastal exploration and shipwrecks\, and the environmental effects of early commercial resource extraction along the coast.

SUMMARY:Sea Otter Fur Trade Talk w/ Cameron La Follette
DESCRIPTION:Come to Coos History Museum for a talk about the sea otter fur trade. This presentation will trace the history of Oregon’s sea otters\, beginning with the early maritime trade\, through the period of the major fur companies such as Hudson’s Bay Company\, to the time of the late hunting bonanza. The presentation\, in partnership with the Elakha Alliance\, will also address the likelihood that sea otters could successfully be reintroduced to Oregon coastal waters. \nSpeaker Bio: Cameron La Follette is a historian of the Northwest Coast\, focusing on land use history\, exploration\, shipwrecks\, and early commercial natural resource extraction. She is also the executive director of Oregon Coast Alliance\, a coastal conservation and land use protection organization. She was the lead researcher and author of all the historical articles in the 2018 Oregon Historical Quarterly special issue investigating the 17th-century Spanish galleon shipwreck on the Oregon coast. She has additionally lead-authored two recent books on sustainability and ecological governance.
