DESCRIPTION:We are collaborating Dreams of a Scientist alongside Cape Perpetua Collaborative to host a Bioblitz and community market! Meet us out at Yachats State Park at 10am for the Bioblitz\, and then join us at Wildcraft Cidery from noon-3 to meet some amazing ocean-inspired artists and educators. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBioBlitzes are a community effort to record as many species in an area during a certain time period. Volunteers of all experience levels can document the species living in and around the Cape Perpetua area using the iNaturalist app and upload their photos and observations. We will have marine scientists and naturalists out in the field to help volunteers record and learn about the species they find. \nAfter tidepooling\, we will meet at Wildcraft Cider & Pantry to hold a community market with marine science organizations\, vendors\, and artists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a free event\, but we ask that you register below so we can determine how many people to expect. Discover how resilience\, balance\, and ingenuity are shaping the future of life along our coasts. \nRegister for Webinar\nThis series is brought to you by Seven Capes Bird Alliance in partnership with Friends of Otter Rock\, Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition\, Oregon Kelp Alliance\, and the Elakha Alliance. \nA large marine epidemic known as sea star wasting disease hit the Oregon coast in 2014. This caused an important sea urchin predator\, the sunflower sea star\, to decline by more than 98% in population size. This large\, fast\, up to 28-armed sea star influences urchin populations not only by directly consuming urchins\, but also by indirectly affecting their behavior through fear. The loss of this predator is linked to a 70% decline of Oregon’s kelp forests and an increase in urchin populations\, creating urchin-dominated barrens. Miles will walk us through his laboratory research\, where he quantified how many urchins a sunflower sea star can eat\, and his field experiments\, where he dove in Oregon’s cold turbulent waters to test the effect of sunflower sea star presence on urchin behavior and grazing.  \nMiles Rough is a Ph.D. student at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in the laboratory of Dr. Aaron Galloway. Miles is fascinated by kelp forest dynamics\, particularly the shifts between healthy ecosystems and urchin-dominated barrens. He uses field and laboratory experiments to understand the role of sunflower sea stars as a key predator influencing urchin populations and ecosystem stability. Miles is an AAUS scientific diver and SCUBA instructor\, using diving both to conduct research and to train others in underwater observation techniques. He earned his B.S. in Biology with a focus on Marine Biology from Oregon State University in 2024.

Again and again\, progress for wild places and imperiled species has come not from closed-door deals\, but from everyday Oregonians showing up\, sharing their stories\, and reminding lawmakers that they represent not only the people of Oregon\, but also our countless wildlife neighbors who make our state so special. \nOn February 11\, we have a powerful opportunity to do just that. Join Elakha Alliance and partners from across the state for Wildlife Action Day at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem\, where advocates will rally and meet directly with legislators in support of House Bill 4134\, also known as 1% for Wildlife. This legislation would provide stable\, dedicated funding to protect wildlife\, restore habitat\, and invest in long-term conservation solutions. \nSIGN UP TO ATTEND\nWhen you join us for this Action Day\, you’ll build confidence\, learn how change really happens\, and gain advocacy skills you can use for any issue you care about. You will learn how to communicate with elected officials\, share your values effectively\, and take part in a coordinated\, joyful day of action alongside people who care deeply about Oregon’s future. These are skills (and friendships!) that last long after the rally ends. \nThis Wildlife Action Day will include a rally at the Capitol\, followed by meetings with legislators. Kate’s took our suggestion of incorporating sea salt from the Oregon coast from our friends at Jacobsen Salt Co. for this collab! The flavor will be available throughout October at all Kate’s Ice Cream locations. \nTo celebrate the release\, Bennett will unveil a custom art installation at Kate’s NW 23rd shop\, alongside exclusive merchandise featuring Ottie. All merch proceeds will benefit Elakha Alliance\, a nonprofit working to restore sea otters to the Oregon coast. \nLaunch Party\nDate: Thursday\, October 9\nTime: 5-8 PM\nLocation: The Portland Aquarium: Presented by Mike Bennett Studios: 603 SW Broadway\,\nPortland\, OR 97205\nDetails: Public event featuring Bennett’s Aquarium Art Exhibit\, merch launch\, Kate’s Ice Cream\, and community celebration. Last year\, our survey of attendees revealed they came from 18 states and Canada. With the move to late summer\, we anticipate warmer weather and even more visitors! \nYour participation not only supports the Festival\, but also earns your business access to the extensive event marketing and promotions. Last year\, the media campaign reached more than 750\,000 people and the estimated economic impact was $900\,000.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Clackamas Community College Environmental Learning Center (ELC) for a series of presentations that explore wetlands\, wildlife\, and both current and historical human-wildlife interactions provided by professionals and experts in their fields. There is a $10 suggested donation to cover costs. \nOn Thursday July 24th\, from 12pm-1pm\, join Chanel Hason\, Director of Outreach and Community Relations for the Elakha Alliance\, for an engaging presentation about the organization’s efforts to restore sea otters to the Oregon coast. Discover how these charismatic marine mammals are vital to the health of our coastal ecosystems\, the history behind their disappearance\, and the collaborative work being done to bring them back. Learn how you can support this critical conservation mission and help make a lasting impact on Oregon’s marine environment. \nReservations:\nTo reserve your ticket\, select “Get tickets\,” then select the program(s) you would like to attend. \nDrop-ins: On the day of the program\, you can register with a staff member at the ELC.
