Her research on the welfare of captive and wild otter populations in the Pacific Northwest\, including her longitudinal study of Whidbey Island’s otters\, has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences. She splits her time between a cabin on Whidbey Island\, Washington\, and a farm in McMinnville\, Oregon\, with her husband\, Tom\, and their dogs\, cats\, chickens\, ducks\, and honeybees.

DESCRIPTION:Join for an immersive food experience that will bring you closer to our oceans bounty as well as the species that depend on and impact our healthy coastal ecosystems! This event will be a unique mix of coastal foraging demonstrations\, learning about the charismatic sea otter\, their disappearance and hopes for reintroduction as well as enjoying a bites of local shellfish and seaweeds. \nSECURE YOUR SPOT\nOnce abundant across the North Pacific\, sea otters were aggressively hunted during the maritime fur trade for their rich fur pelts\, resulting in a loss of 99% of the global population. While the species has recovered along much of its range\, there has not been a population of this important keystone species in Oregon for over 100 years. The Elakha Alliance is an Oregon nonprofit working to build the science\, policy\, and community engagement to reintroduce a population of sea otters to the Oregon Coast and 10% of sales from this event will go to their ongoing efforts to bring sea otters back to Oregon!

Learn more about the Lecture Series and purchase in-person or virtual tickets \nWednesday April 8th\, 7pm: Elakha Alliance: A New Approach to Sea Otter Conservation – Presented by Jane Bacchieri \nThe Elakha Alliance is leading a collaborative endeavor to reestablish sea otters to their historic range on the Oregon coast. Jane Bacchieri joined the Alliance as its first Executive Director in 2022. Jane has over 25 years of experience in natural resources management which includes leading planning and watershed management teams for the City of Portland and serving as a natural resources policy advisor for Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski. She has engaged with communities to protect and conserve coastal and freshwater resources through her work with the Oregon Coastal Management Program\, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve\, the National Park Service\, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Kingdom of Tonga. Jane holds a Master of Environmental Management degree from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of Vermont.

Kate’s took our suggestion of incorporating sea salt from the Oregon coast from our friends at Jacobsen Salt Co. for this collab! The flavor will be available throughout October at all Kate’s Ice Cream locations. \nTo celebrate the release\, Bennett will unveil a custom art installation at Kate’s NW 23rd shop\, alongside exclusive merchandise featuring Ottie. All merch proceeds will benefit Elakha Alliance\, a nonprofit working to restore sea otters to the Oregon coast. \nLaunch Party\nDate: Thursday\, October 9\nTime: 5-8 PM\nLocation: The Portland Aquarium: Presented by Mike Bennett Studios: 603 SW Broadway\,\nPortland\, OR 97205\nDetails: Public event featuring Bennett’s Aquarium Art Exhibit\, merch launch\, Kate’s Ice Cream\, and community celebration. SUMMARY:North Coast KelpFest! (California)
DESCRIPTION:The first North Coast KelpFest! was held from mid-May to mid-June 2024\, bringing art\, science\, food and film together to tell the story of kelp forests on California’s north coast. Through a month long series of events\, communities from across Northern California were invited to the Mendocino coast to learn about and celebrate the ocean’s forests\, and connect with coastal ecosystems and culture in a meaningful way. The combination of innovative art + science\, ocean-oriented and kelp-inspired events hosted through KelpFest! engaged the hearts and minds of people of all ages and ethnicities. These events were designed to contribute to the success of kelp restoration efforts and ultimately create sustained appreciation and stewardship for this ocean ecosystem. \nThe Elakha Alliance is happy to be involved this year – come meet Kyle who will be tabling for us! \nThe second North Coast KelpFest! is happening in Mendocino and Fort Bragg October 3-6\, 2025.
