SUMMARY:Sea Otter Awareness Week (SOAW)
DESCRIPTION:Annually\, throughout the last full week of September\, we celebrate sea otters during Sea Otter Awareness Week (Sept 20-26). We encourage zoological and educational institutions\, governmental agencies and communities to plan and undertake events that highlight sea otters. These activities include sharing stories\, disseminating science and generating media that inspire a deeper awareness of these unique marine mammals\, their ecological importance and the many challenges they face. \nSea Otter Awareness Week is organized and sponsored by Defenders of Wildlife\, Sea Otter Savvy\, California Department of Parks and Recreation\, the Elakha Alliance\, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. \nHere is a list of all the events held in Oregon: \n\nSept 9th – Sea Otter Pint Night Benefit at pFriem Family Brewers in Milwaukie\, OR\nSept 15th  – Sea Otter Drag Bingo Benefit at Breakside Brewery – Slabtown\, Portland\, OR\nSept 20th – Sea Otter Viewing Station at Oregon Zoo\, Portland\, OR\nSept 20th – Sea Otter Sip & Paint Night #1 at Fullerton Wines\, Portland\, OR\nSept 22nd – Float Down the Coast Livestream\, Virtual\nSept 22nd – Sea Otter Pint Night at Claim 52 Brewing\, Eugene\, OR\nSept 23rd – Sea Otter Sip & Paint Night #2 at Fullerton Wines\, Portland\, OR\nSept 24th – Sea Otter Bingo at Claim 52 Bayfront\, Newport\, OR\nSept 26th – Sea Otter Viewing Station at Oregon Coast Aquarium\, Newport\, OR\nSept 26th – Sea Otter Extravaganza at The Portland Aquarium\, Portland\, OR

Come stop by the Elakha Alliance table and learn more about sea otter reintroduction efforts in Oregon. \nOregon Sea Otter Viewing Stations:\n– Sunday September 20th\, 10am-2pm: Oregon Zoo\, Portland\n– Saturday September 26th\, 10am-4pm: Oregon Coast Aquarium\, Newport \nStop by our table right next to the sea otter exhibit from 10am-2pm and meet with one of our Elakha representatives to learn the history of sea otters in Oregon\, and why it’s critical for them to return to their native waters. You can also learn how the Oregon Zoo is supporting our efforts as a Conservation Partner. \n

Your ticket serves as a direct donation to the Elakha Alliance\, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring Oregon’s sea otter population. Reservations are required\, and participants of all ages are welcome. \nNo painting experience? No problem! Artist and Oregon Zoo Marine Life Keeper Megan Tate Hagedorn will guide you step-by-step through creating a beautiful sea otter inspired by the Mona Lisa – ‘Mona Lutris‘. All skill levels can join in the fun – just bring your creativity and enthusiasm! \n \n\nThe ticket price includes: \n\nAll paint supplies\nInstruction\nAprons\nAn 11×14 take-home canvas\nOne complimentary glass of single vineyard wine valued at $22 (for those 21+)\n\nCancellations 72 hours before event will be offered a refund. Cancellations after 72 hours will have their ticket payment remain as a donation to the Elakha Alliance. \nIMPORTANT INFORMATION: Beverages will be available for purchase.
